Outdoor Stair Lifts for Hawaii Entry Steps

In Hawaii the hardest stairs are often outside. A raised house has a flight of steps to the front door. A hillside house may have twenty or thirty from the street. They are open to the rain, and for an older family member they can decide whether leaving the house is worth the effort.

What an outdoor stair lift does

A rail is fixed beside the steps and a seat travels along it. The rider sits, fastens a belt and holds a control. At the top the seat turns toward the landing so they can stand up safely.

Made for the outdoors

  • Finishes that resist corrosion
  • Sealed motor and electronics
  • A seat that tolerates sun and rain
  • A fitted cover
  • A key switch

Island conditions

  • Salt air. Rinse the rail with fresh water and dry it. This is the single most useful thing an owner can do.
  • Sun. Keep the cover on to protect the seat.
  • Rain. Steps should drain well. Moss and algae on the treads should be cleaned off.
  • Plants. Keep foliage trimmed back from the rail.

The steps

Concrete and solid timber steps both work. The surveyor checks their condition, since the rail is anchored to them. Uneven or crumbling steps should be repaired first.

Long or winding stairs

A straight run uses a standard rail. Where steps turn or have landings, a custom rail or more than one lift may be needed.

Power

The lift runs on batteries and charges from an outdoor outlet. It keeps working if the power goes out.

Who it suits

Someone who can walk a little and sit down safely. For a wheelchair, a platform lift is the right equipment.

Service

Have the lift checked once a year, or more often close to the ocean.
